Phthalates

For those who like air fresheners I recommend this article How "Fresh" Is Air Freshener? The big companies are continually coming up with new devices to deliver 'air freshener' but do you really want the phthalates? I don't believe the claims that a spray can eliminate odors, that would require eliminating the source of the odor and I highly doubt a spray would be able to track it down, unless you sprayed everywhere, literally, if you where going to go through that kind of trouble, why not take care of the problem properly from the source, then you wouldn't need that 'odor eliminating' spray.

Personally, I don't light a scented candle in an attempt to cover up an odor, I light one for the pure pleasure of the fragrance and the ambiance of the flame.

Grapefruit seed extract

Once in a while I stumble upon something amazing while searching for new ideas and such, this time it's grapefruit seed extract. Originally I wanted a natural preservative for liquid soap, I don't use chemicals and want the soap to last a bit longer so I went looking around the net for ideas, I stopped at grapefruit seed extract and wish I had known about it sooner.

Grapefruit seed extract has been proven to be safe and effective for a wide range of uses. It's a broad spectrum meaning it can be used for many purposes both internally and externally, you can read all about it here. Externally it can be used for acne, athletes foot, infections, warts, rashes, cold sores, herpes, head lice and so much more. Internally some of the uses include gastrointestinal disorders, diarrhea, food poisoning, colds, flu, sore throat, ear inflammation and it's effective against drug resistant bacteria.

Not only am I using it as a natural preservative, I'm using it to wash off vegetables like spinach, I don't want the risk of ecoli infection after the last scare, it can happen too easily.

The Soaps

No, I don't mean soap operas *LOL*.

This blog is called Harbour Lights because I live in the harbour and make candles (lights), this is also what I call my line of soy candles and tarts.

I make a number of bath products as well, you will hear about them all sooner or later but lately I've concentrated on creating new all vegetable soap using the old fashioned cold processed way. I started with melt and pour soap, the type you buy all ready, you need only melt it, add colour and fragrance then pour into your molds, it's pretty easy and perhaps a good place to start. There are a lot of fun soaps you can make using the clear glycerin melt and pour, I keep some on hand for that purpose, it's not as bad as the store bought commercial soap but glycerin soap is made using alcohol, something you don't want on your skin. To confuse you, glycerin is something that occurs naturally in the soap making process, massed produced commercial soap has had the glycerin removed for more expensive products leaving only detergent behind. Glycerin is good because it's a humectant, it draws moisture from the air to your skin and helps retain it, protecting the skin.

My soap is made with all vegetable oils and luxurious butters like Shea and Cocoa, I do not use animal fats and my products are not tested on animals. Because of the internet the world has become much smaller, it's getting easier to find information about the age-old secrets of countries far, far away. Here's what I have on my eBay store site: Shea Butter is a multi-purpose all natural vitamin A skin cream. The butter is derived naturally from the seed of the Shea Tree, also known as the Karite Tree which means ‘The Tree of Life’. An ancient beauty secret from coastal West Africa, Shea Butter has been used by traditional healers for centuries for the healing of small wounds, dermites, cracks, crevices as well as skin ulcers. If you have arthritis ache, joint pain or muscular ache, massage shea butter into the area, not only will it help relieve pain, it conditions, moisturizes and protects your skin at the same time. Shea Butter has been clinically proven to assist with Eczema and Psoriasis and naturally helps guard against extreme weather.
